PairPods makes it easy to share music with friends

Have you ever been in a crowded airport or event venue and you and a friend want to listen to the same music? While the technology exists to share music between devices, it’s not the easiest feat to accomplish. This is where PairPods for macOS comes into play.

About PairPods for macOS

PairPods is a lightweight macOS utility that allows users to connect more than one Bluetooth device simultaneously for the purpose of sharing audio. First of its kind, the app is free and open-source and can be downloaded directly from pairpods.app. The first beta release of the app (v0.1.0) was rolled out on February 28, 2025, and it included:

Basic functionality to share audio between two connected Bluetooth devices. Menubar icon with a toggle to start and stop audio sharing. Homebrew installation option for easy setup. Sparkle integration to check for automatic updates. Option to Launch at login. Manual installation instructions for downloading and running the app directly.

PairPods makes sharing audio on macOS effortless by letting you play audio through two Bluetooth devices at the same time—perfect for listening with friends, watching movies together, or using multiple audio outputs at once. What normally requires manually creating a multi-output device in macOS’s Audio MIDI Setup is simplified to a single click. PairPods automatically detects compatible devices and handles the rest.

Built to feel like a native macOS feature, PairPods runs from a clean menu bar interface with accessibility support, keyboard shortcuts, and clear visual indicators. Behind the scenes, it uses SwiftUI, Core Audio, and modern Swift practices and built with Xcode’s latest tools, all while respecting your privacy—no data collection, ever (the app operates entirely local on your machine). Sparkle was used for update management and LaunchAtLogin for convenience.

The developer, Paweł Woźniak, is passionate about creating useful, open-source tools to make people’s lives easier. PairPods is his first published macOS app, but he has other open-source projects that can be found through GitHub. Customer service is primarily handled through GitHub issues, where users can report bugs or request features.

Woźniak felt the biggest challenge he faced while developing PairPods was working with the low-level Core Audio APIs because documentation was sparse.

I had to do a lot of research and experimentation to get the audio routing working correctly. Additionally, I had to learn about the entire development cycle, GitHub workflows for CI/CD, and the notarization process for macOS apps.

    User Experience

I have to admit that when I first stumbled upon this app I wasn’t sure about its purpose. I thought, “Don’t all my headphones connect via Bluetooth? Isn’t that all this app does?” That’s when I realized that it’s for music sharing between devices. Installation was simple, and no was setup required. It has been very refreshing to work with such a low-maintenance app. I didn’t have to check any boxes in preferences or customize the app in any way. It just worked.

The first time I tried to connect more than one set of headphones (AirPods Max and AirPods Pro), I got a warning stating that not enough Bluetooth devices were connected. It directed me to look at connected devices in the Bluetooth menu. When I did, it showed that both sets of headphones were connected. So, I connected a non-Apple brand of headphones.

Even though three sets of headphones were connected via Bluetooth, I still got the error dialogue. It then occurred to me that maybe the app wouldn’t work unless audio was playing. I opened Apple Music and started some music. Then I clicked on “Share Audio” and the two active headphones started playing music through both sets of headphones.

Is this something that everyone will use 100% of the time? No — but it does serve a purpose. We asked the developer about the app’s purpose and inspiration and this is what they said.

PairPods makes it super easy to share audio with friends by allowing you to play audio on two Bluetooth audio devices simultaneously.

I built PairPods primarily to solve my own need. The design philosophy was to create something that feels native to macOS, with a simple menubar interface that doesn’t get in the way. I wanted it to feel like a feature that should have been built into macOS from the beginning.

Anyone using macOS can benefit from PairPods. It makes it so easy to share music with friends or watch a movie together without a complicated run-around. PairPods has a simple interface by design. The developer wanted the UI to be as easy to use as possible — just a single toggle.

    Conclusion

PairPods for macOS is one of those rare utility apps that solves a very specific problem with elegance and simplicity. It takes the complicated process of sharing audio between two Bluetooth devices and turns it into a seamless, one-click solution. Whether you’re traveling, studying, or just want to share a movie with a friend without disturbing those around you, PairPods delivers exactly what you need without unnecessary extras. While it’s not an app you’ll use daily, when you do need it, you’ll be glad it’s there — and even more so because it’s free, open-source, and thoughtfully designed to feel like a native part of macOS.
