Serious Health Risk Triggers a Public Health Alert for This Popular Grocery Staple—Heres What We Know

While recalls are necessary when our favorite products pose a health risk, they can be frustrating for consumers as well. And considering the way products are mass-produced today, recalls seem to be popping up on nearly a daily basis. As a consumer, it’s important to stay informed whenever a product you use is recalled, as the risk can far outweigh the reward depending on the customer.

On May 13, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a public health alert for ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken and bacon wrap products due to the possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. According to the notice, a recall has not been requested, however, as the affected products are no longer available for purchase.

The ready-to-eat chicken and bacon ranch wrap products were reportedly produced on May 2, 2025, and shipped to distributors in Massachusetts and New York, with further distribution to retail locations in Connecticut. The problem was discovered when a state public health partner notified FSIS of a product sample that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

For those unaware, consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women and their newborns. Common symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
