Bill Murray is coming clean about the long-running myth that he sometimes helps himself to french fries—from the plates of complete strangers.
“Man’s gotta eat, man’s gotta eat,” the Saturday Night Live legend joked to Page Six earlier this week.

The Ghostbusters star, 74, implied that it’s not completely his fault, since fries “often just lean off a plate and they’re ready” to be grabbed. He added that diners “usually have a couple spares.”
“Come on, it’s New York! There’s a lot of excess here, there’s plenty of food,” he added.
Murray made the big reveal about his french fry obsession at the Feb. 26 Cinema Society screening of his new film Riff Raff.
The rumors about Murray’s fry thievery first surfaced about 15 years ago when a Reddit user shared a story about someone reaching around behind them when they were walking in New York City and grabbing two of their McDonald’s fries. They were shocked to discover the alleged fry thief was none other than Murray.
“Before I could get a word out, he yelled over the crowd, ‘No one will ever believe you.’ He then cross to the other side of 7th avenue and disappeared into the crowd,” the alleged victim of Murray’s fry thievery wrote.
In 2016, another alleged victim took to Twitter, now X, and posted a photo of Murray allegedly caught in the act. “Bill Murray stealing my friend's fries!” the post is captioned. It does appear to be Murray in the photo, but you can only see part of his hand, so it’s unclear what, if anything, he’s grabbing.

— YellowLine (@YL_Ninja) August 21, 2016Despite the claims, during a 2018 BBC interview, Murray seemingly denied he’s ever copped someone’s fries, but then hilariously changed course with what could be interpreted as an admission of guilt.
“I don’t know if that really happened, but to me…there’s nothing better than stealing piping hot french fries, that’s living…they’re free, they’re right there, they’re bonus potatoes,” he said.
Recently seen on SNL50: The Anniversary Special, Murray plays a hitman in Riff Raff. The film also stars Ed Harris, Pete Davidson, Gabrielle Union and Jennifer Coolidge.
