SAM’S Club bosses have spoken out after customers continue to lash out at the retailer’s plans to overhaul its checkout system.
The wholesaler is in the process of revamping its warehouses, but not all customers have welcomed the move.
Bosses are stripping out self-checkout machines, encouraging customers to pay for items using the retailer’s scan and go payment method.
News of the checkout change has gone viral, prompting some to question whether they’ll carry on using the retailer.
But, bosses at one store in Corpus Christi, Texas, have provided an update to customers.
They revealed that self-checkouts and manned lanes will be available inside the warehouse for the rest of the year, as reported by the NBC affiliate KRIS-TV.
Sam’s Club has also confirmed that there will be options available for customers who don’t wish to use the scan and go tool.
A spokesperson explained there will be workers with tablets available to help shoppers.
But, angry members have accused the retailer, owned by Walmart, of imposing a 1984-style policy on its customers, according to an X thread.
George Orwell’s book 1984 is premised around a dystopian, authoritarian regime.
“Just say no to ‘scan and go’ why can’t we have human cashiers?” one shopper raged.
“Are you trying to implement 1984 on us?”
Shoppers are concerned that embracing scan and go will alienate certain customers.
“Please look into an alternative for us longtime customers!!!” another member begged.
Some furious customers have threatened to walk away from Sam’s Club entirely because of the pending checkout change.
“Heard you are going to get rid of regular check outs and use scan and go…” a shopper said.
“We [sic] not be renewing our membership. We have disabled and elderly in our family, and don’t us AI anything or Apps… Goodbye.”
