Duff Goldman’s health journey is all about balance.
The longtime Holiday Baking Championship judge, 50, shared his approach to weight loss and how being kind to himself has been beneficial in the long run while chatting exclusively with Parade ahead of the premiere of his new Food Network series, Super Mega Cakes. Goldman used his family’s recent road trip as a perfect example of how he’s been able to enjoy the foods he loves while continuing his healthier lifestyle.

“When I'm on a road trip and we're driving around, I'm going to eat some burgers. I'm going to steal my daughter's chicken fingers. I might have a milkshake. You know what I mean?” he begins. “We're on a road trip. We're doing it, and I'm going to enjoy it because we're here for a good time, not a long time. But as soon as I'm back, I'm back on smoothies and salmon and lettuce.”
He continues: “And I think that because I've been giving myself a little more grace, getting back into the swing of things is easier than it used to be. It's hard when you start this journey, and you're like, ‘Okay, I need to get in shape.’ And then you get on there, and there's just so many bad habits that you're trying to break. So as you're doing it, when you ease up on yourself a little bit, it's just getting easier.”
Goldman goes on to tell Parade that being “kinder to yourself” makes you “more understanding,” which almost seems counterintuitive.
“When you give yourself a little more leeway, you are able to understand that it's not a straight line,” he says. “You know what I mean? It's a curvy path towards getting healthy.”
As for how much weight he’s lost so far, Goldman says he’s down about 42 pounds.

“At one point though, earlier this year, I was like 56 pounds down,” he continues. “So I've put back on a good amount because I've been on vacation, but again, I'm good. I'm happy. It's OK.”

In addition to sharing his health journey update, Goldman also tells Parade all about Super Mega Cakes, which is set to premiere on Food Network on Monday, June 16.
“Basically, the show is this: there are six teams of three people each, so each team has three cake artists on there, and then I have a team of 12 people, and it's basically my 12 versus their 18,” he explains. “Everybody gets four days, so each team has four days to make a cake. I have four days to make six. That's how we made it even. It's like, three on three."
Super Mega Cakes premieres on Monday, June 16, at 9 p.m. ET.
