Polyfamily is gearing up for an emotional episode as the closed quad—Alysia and Tyler Rodgers and Sean and Taya Hartless—seek to establish four-way parental rights for their combined five children.
Ahead of the May 19 episode, TLC shared an exclusive sneak peek with Parade showing Taya breaking down after learning there was no legal precedent for granting parental rights to four people at the same time.

For context, Tyler is married to Alysia but also dating Taya—and Sean is married to Taya but also dating Alysia. The two men are not romantically involved and neither are the two women.
Alysia and Tyler have two kids, Dylan and Rayna, from before the closed quad. Afterward, Alysia gave birth to Barrett and Taya gave birth to Carver and Quentin; they opted not to find out who the biological fathers are for the youngest three kids.
"There's no precedent for having four parents on a birth certificate or three parents on a birth certificate," an adoption lawyer told the quad in the exclusive clip.
She continued, "So to do an adoption, like a third-party adoption, usually what happens is one biological parent is terminating their parental rights in order to allow another parent to step in legally and have parental rights."
The lawyer said she saw no way to have all four adults have equal parental rights under the current laws.
"Any judge in Oregon would probably say no because there's no legal basis for it. And we would have to appeal it," she detailed. "So it would be an appeal issue—court of appeals, no legal basis for it, either."
Ultimately, the law would have to be changed by passing new legislation, she explained.
Taya took the news especially hard.
"It shouldn't be a shocker, right? But it's frustrating," she admitted while fighting back tears during a confessional with producers.
She added, "I just wish this could be easy. And for the world we're living in, it's just not."
