Police: Suspect shot dead by deputy amid homicide, violent crime spree investigation

DENVER (KDVR) -- Police said the suspect in a homicide and "violent crime spree" was shot and killed by a deputy in Adams County on Saturday.

The Brighton Police Department said in a press release that the investigation started with a report that came in at 8:44 p.m. of an assault victim in the 200 block of 11th Avenue.

When officers arrived, the department said they found a 72-year-old man dead from a "violent assault." Police identified the suspect as a relative and family members said he was "acting erratically."

Investigators alerted law enforcement in the area that the suspect was driving a silver Honda CRV. Officers with the Thornton Police Department found the CRV when the suspect was involved in a crash near the 4700 block of East 168th Avenue.

"A passerby who stopped to assist was carjacked at knifepoint by the suspect. The suspect fled the scene in the victim’s Camaro," the police department said.

At that point, multiple law enforcement agencies joined in the search.

Within minutes, a deputy with the Adams County Sheriff's Office located the vehicle near East 160th Avenue and Washington Street. The vehicle was at a home that police said belonged to a family member of the suspect and homicide victim.

Deputies confronted the suspect, who fired a weapon at a deputy. Police said the deputy returned fire, ultimately killing the suspect.

The investigation is ongoing and police ask anyone with information to contact the tip line at 303-655-8740.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Adams County Critical Incident Team. The Adams County Coroner's Office will release the identities of the deceased.
