Education Ministry rehabilitates 70 schools since Assad regime’s fall

The Syrian Ministry of Education announced on Monday, April 21, that it has restored and rehabilitated about 70 schools in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime.

The Directorate of School Buildings in the Ministry of Education has completed the restoration and rehabilitation of approximately 70 schools out of the total 8,000 schools that were out of service in Syria since the liberation of the country.

Mohammad Hanoon, the director of school buildings, stated to the Syrian News Agency (SANA) that more than half of the schools went out of service due to the bombing by the previous regime in various governorates, and due to the earthquake that struck Syria in February 2023, which inflicted structural damages requiring urgent restoration and comprehensive maintenance.

Hanoon confirmed that the ministry conducted a needs assessment for 2,050 schools in collaboration with several international and local organizations working in the education sector, and the restoration of 70 schools in different governorates has been completed.

The official noted that the damages suffered by these schools varied between partial or complete destruction.

Regarding the challenges faced by the Ministry of Education, Hanoon pointed out the absence of prior studies for these schools, due to the inability to access them before the fall of the Assad regime to conduct necessary assessments.

The ministry is currently working on preparing studies to rehabilitate schools according to modern global specifications and standards, aimed at ensuring a safe educational environment for students.

Additionally, the process of numbering exam centers has begun, which will facilitate the examination process for students and educational staff in the current academic season.

The director of school buildings previously mentioned to the Al-Thawra newspaper at the beginning of last month that restoration needs were distributed among 186 schools in Idlib province that require renovation due to attacks by the previous regime, reflecting the significant challenges faced by the region.

In Aleppo, 15 schools need maintenance and rehabilitation work, in Tartus 11 schools, in Damascus 5 schools face challenges requiring renewal, in addition to 9 schools in rural Damascus needing restoration.

For Homs province, there are 4 schools in urgent need of maintenance, and in Daraa, two schools need restoration, while in Latakia, there are 3 schools needing improvements.

Hanoon also confirmed that the process of rehabilitation and restoration has begun in collaboration with international and local entities according to clear and integrated participatory mechanisms and plans.
