WEBSTER, N.Y. – Local law enforcement and emergency responders participated in a crucial training exercise at Webster Thomas High School Thursday. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with multiple fire and police departments to practice responding to a school shooting scenario.
The exercise was part of the Sheriff’s Office’s “Aggressive Deadly Behavior” program, which began in 2018. It aimed to test first responders’ training and tactics while building their skills.
“As much effort that goes into prevention and dealing with the reasons why violence happens in these settings, we still have to be prepared for the fact that eventually it’s going to be a reality in a community,” said Webster Police Chief Dennis Kohlmeier. “And if it’s going to be ours, we want to make sure that we’re in a position to deal with it, and save as many lives as possible.”
The program uses a multi-disciplinary approach to bring a higher level of medical care to victims quickly and extricate them from the scene. This is achieved through a rescue task force that pairs law enforcement with firefighters and EMS.
The training’s goal is to ensure quick evacuation of victims and provide medical care during mass casualty events.
