Authorities on Friday named the San Diego police officer who fatally shot a teenager during a confrontation near the Santa Fe Depot.
Officer Daniel Gold was responding to a shooting that had just occurred in the Core-Columbia district when he encountered the boy, aged 16, in the 1100 block of Kettner Boulevard shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
Moments later, Gold opened fire. Paramedics took the teen, whose identity has not been released, to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Officials initially had described the person who was killed as a man in his early 20s.
A handgun was recovered from the teen, sheriff’s officials said, but they added no further information regarding what prompted Gold to shoot him.
No other injuries were reported.
Gold has been with the San Diego Police Department for two years. He is assigned to Central Division patrol.
The sheriff’s office investigates shootings involving the SDPD under terms of a 2022 regional agreement designed to prevent conflicts of interest.
