Reports: ICE raids planned for Thursday in Aurora delayed, but not canceled

DENVER (KDVR) — Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were expected to start immigration raids in Aurora on Thursday morning, but those raids have reportedly been postponed.

The large-scale immigration operation was delayed due to national media leaks, according to reports from NBC News from multiple federal sources. Initial reports were that ICE agents would begin 'Operation Aurora' on Thursday, but NBC is now reporting the effort has been temporarily delayed because the leaks posed security risks.

Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly spoke about the possible information leaks and risks to law enforcement on Wednesday.

"I think it's just critical that anybody that's leaking information that's confidential that could get cops killed, that are trying to do their jobs and keep their communities safe, so I think that's something that needs to be brought forward," he told FOX31. "Somebody" is going to get hurt."

On Tuesday, officials confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security had requested the use of facility space at Buckley Space Force Base near Aurora for ICE immigration processing. According to a statement provided by U.S. Northern Command, the facilities were provided to “enable U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to stage and process criminal aliens within the U.S. for an operation taking place in Colorado.”

The news also comes after several Drug Enforcement Administration operations around the Denver metro area, including a raid on Sunday morning at a makeshift nightclub wherein 49 people were detained, and ICE took 41 people into custody who were reportedly in the country illegally.
