Chiefs-Bills TV ratings revealed with highest Championship Game viewership in more than decade ahead of Super Bowl

THE AFC Championship game drew massive amounts of viewership.

Nearly 60 million people tuned in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills fight for a spot in the Super Bowl.

According to Sports Business Journal’s Austin Knapp, 57.4 million viewers tuned in to the AFC Championship.

That topped the previous year’s matchup between the Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens which saw 55.5 million viewers.

Not only did this year’s AFC Championship show improvement, but it was the most watched championship game in over a decade.

Only the NFL Championship between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants in 2012 topped it with 57.6 million viewers.

NFL fans were baffled by this viewership and shared how impressed they were by the Chiefs drawing in so many viewers.

“But I thought people didn’t want to watch the Chiefs play,” one fan said.

“People keep talking about tired of chiefs but they got best ratings for two weeks in a row,” another fan said.

“The ‘it’s rigged’ audience sure loves to watch the games already knowing the outcome,” a third fan said.

“The Chiefs are America’s team & it is undeniable,” a fourth fan said.

“More than twice the viewership of the CFP championship game. NFL remains king,” a fifth fan said.

While the Chiefs and Bills drew a big crowd for the AFC Championship, the same couldn’t be said for the NFC Championship.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders drew only 44.2 million viewers in their matchup.

It was the least-watched NFL championship game since the 2019 matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints.

That matchup saw 44.1 million viewers.

The Super Bowl matchup between the Chiefs and Eagles will likely draw a massive amount of viewership.

What happens to the fine money?

THE NFL regularly fines athletes tens of thousands of dollars every week during the season.

But where does the money go?

The NFL claims about $4 million a year has been used to support worthy causes since 2011.

According to the NFL operations website, “The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”

It is yet to be seen if it can outdraw last year’s Super Bowl, which saw 120 million viewers.

It was the most-viewed Super Bowl in history.

The previous matchup of the Chiefs and Eagles in the Super Bowl saw 114 million viewers, which was the highest at the time since the 2015 Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

It is possible that they can recreate their success with a close matchup as opposed to a blowout.

Last year’s Super Bowl got such good viewership thanks to going to overtime.
