I love menu bar utilities, but I hate menu bar clutter. For years, I used Bartender to keep my utility icons neat and tidy, but I wanted to try and find an alternative that was available via the App Store. I’ve found that this makes it a lot easier when it comes to system restores and app updates. When I started researching other menu bar organization apps, I happened upon Barbee, which is available in the Mac App Store and offers similar functionality to Bartender.

Overview: Barbee

Barbee is a macOS menu bar management app that helps users organize menu bar icons, adds automation capabilities, provides APIs for other apps, and customizes menu items and appearance. It is aimed at users seeking alternatives to Bartender, particularly those interested in customizing and optimizing their menu bar experience.

Inspired by the developer’s own needs after purchasing a MacBook Pro with a notch in 2021, Barbee was designed to offer a more affordable and user-friendly solution. Built entirely with native Cocoa and SwiftUI, it focuses on performance, reliability, and detail optimization.

Barbee prioritizes user privacy, operating as an offline app that does not collect any data. The developer ensured accessibility and ease of use by testing the app personally, referencing the UI of similar apps, and iterating based on beta testers’ feedback through TestFlight. Feedback from users has directly influenced the addition of new features and bug fixes.

While there are minor bugs that require user assistance to diagnose, the app continues to evolve with features like the upcoming Barbee Extension. Released in late 2021, Barbee remains actively developed with planned enhancements to the macOS menu bar experience. Customer support is available via email and WeChat, and the developer has created other macOS utilities in addition to Barbee.

    Key Features:

    User Experience

Getting Barbee up and running is very simple. Once it’s installed, you simply have to grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions within System Settings and then you can proceed with customizing the app. There are many different settings you can work with including the menu bar’s appearance and adding widgets and automations. The first thing I did was select the icon for the Barbee hidden menu. The different options you can choose from include:

I opted to use the eyes because I thought that would stand out against the Control Center icon, which I cannot change. Having the ability to organize my menu bar and keep it clean makes for a much more productive environment for me. It’s less distracting and I know exactly where I can find all my utilities without them being in the way.

I really enjoy having the ability to group my icons and customize what is shown, hidden, and always hidden. It has always annoyed me that I need certain utilities running but don’t want to see them (i.e. Adobe Creative Cloud). Thankfully, Barbee has that option. It also gives me the option to “Reduce the Interference of the ‘Screen Recording’ icon” which does become distracting, too.

Barbee’s interface is very clean and easy to understand. And if you familiar with Bartender, the transition over to Barbee is very simple as the two apps have similar user interfaces. Barbee’s design is focused on clean aesthetics so those who appreciate a minimalist approach will likely be drawn to this app. Barbee also allows users to set up focus modes for different work environments. It’s a lightweight app that avoids layers of complexity but gets the job done.

    Conclusion

Barbee is a fantastic option for anyone looking to manage their Mac’s menu bar in a clean, efficient way. With its customizable features, automation capabilities, and minimalist design, it strikes a great balance between functionality and simplicity. It also comes with an attractive price point, especially compared to its competitors. Whether you’re transitioning from Bartender or exploring menu bar customization for the first time, Barbee delivers a reliable and intuitive experience.
