California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office Monday touted efforts undertaken in the San Diego region over the past year to combat the flow of fentanyl into the country.
According to Bonta’s Office, the multi-agency Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team — or FAST — seized nearly 300 pounds of fentanyl and made nearly 150 fentanyl-related arrests in 2024.
FAST’s goals include halting cross-border trafficking of the drug and conducting investigations into fentanyl-related overdose deaths in San Diego County.
“Fentanyl is a dangerous poison that leaves death in its wake, but our collective efforts are making a difference,” San Diego U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath said in a statement.
“By targeting distribution networks, bringing federal and state charges against dealers, and implementing outreach efforts to expand awareness and access to Naloxone, the San Diego region saw a decline in deaths caused by fentanyl for the first time in 2023 and we expect to see an even greater decline for 2024.”
FAST was formed in late 2022 and is led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, and multiple other law enforcement agencies.
Along with the statistics pertaining to FAST’s efforts last year, the California Department of Justice said that since early 2022, it has seized over 13 million fentanyl pills, more than 6,000 pounds of fentanyl powder and made around 375 fentanyl-related arrests.
“Fentanyl can easily be hidden in everyday drugs, and even a minuscule amount can be fatal,” Bonta said in a statement.
“We strongly encourage all Californians, particularly our young people, to avoid this deadly drug at all costs. Our collaboration with law enforcement will remain persistent as we confront this urgent issue.”
