Which Blackhawks Prospects Could Play in the 2026 World Junior Championship?

The 2025 World Junior Championship was another fantastic tournament with the USA winning its second consecutive dance, but needing overtime to beat Finland for the gold medal. There were only two Blackhawks prospects in the field, which was a little disappointing. But there’s a chance there’s more for us to watch at next year’s WJC.

Here are some Blackhawks prospects who might be included when the rosters are build in the coming months.

    United States

    AJ Spellacy, F

Spellacy was one of the last cuts from this year’s squad. He turns 19 on Feb. 24 and his combination of size and speed could be a big plus as the US looks for a three-peat. The Blackhawks should sign Spellacy at some point, but he’ll have to go back to junior because of his age next season (unless the right university makes him an offer?).

    Canada

    Sacha Boisvert, C

Boisvert turns 19 on March 17 and is averaging almost a point-per-game as a true freshman at North Dakota this season. He has size and speed down the middle, something Canada surely lacked in this year’s disappointing tournament. The Blackhawks’ second pick in the 2024 first round could help Canada down the middle. And they need it.

    Marek Vanacker, F

Vanacker turns 19 on April 12 and he’s another scorer who can fly and has good size. His 2024-25 season started late because of a shoulder injury that required surgery, but he scored 36 goals in his pre-draft season and six in his first 15 games for Brantford this season. He was the Blackhawks’ third pick in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft.

    John Mustard, F

Mustard is also having a fine freshman season at Providence. He brings elite speed to the table and has no problem letting shots fly — something Canada could use. Mustard has been credited with 69 shots on goal in his first 19 collegiate contests. And he doesn’t turn 19 until Aug. 16.
