Scottie Scheffler wins record-breaking PGA Championship prize to match Tiger Woods feat

Scottie Scheffler is halfway to the Career Grand Slam after a dominant PGA Championship victory at Quail Hollow.

The two-time Masters champion added another trophy to his cabinet after shooting 71 on Sunday to finish 11-under par, five ahead of his rivals.

LIV star Jon Rahm launched a strong challenge and was tied for the lead after a birdie on the 11th, but couldn’t keep pace as the world No.1 produced birdies on 10, 14 and 15 just as things were getting close.

Scheffler earned his third major and 15th PGA Tour victory at just 28 years of age – only two players can match that feat since World War II, all-time greats Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

The PGA Championship has increased its prize pot $19million this year, with Scheffler taking home a tournament record $3.42million.

He still needs the US Open and The Open to complete the slam and, on this form, the Texan could well be there by July.

Only six golfers have won all four majors – Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and most recently Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman finally won The Masters in April after years of near misses but fell apart at Quail Hollow having only just made the cut.

It came amid revelations that his driver head had to be replaced after random testing showed it to be non-conforming.

Defending champion Xander Schauffele hinted that Scheffler also fell foul of the regulation.

“I think Scott is winning the tournament and I think he switched to his backup too,” Schauffele said.

If he did change clubs, it didn’t put the champ off his game, which should come as no surprise after Scheffler shot a five-under 66 in his second round despite being arrested that morning at last year’s tournament.

Victory in Charlotte comes with a host of privileges and prizes, and not just the incredible Wanamaker Trophy.

All PGA Championship winners receive a lifetime exemption, meaning they can play the tournament for the rest of their careers.

And a win also secures an automatic spot at the other three majors for five years, not that Scheffler is likely to need that.

Schauffele had the privilege of hosting a Champions Dinner this year, laying on a spread including wagyu steaks, jumbo shrimp and banana splits.

It looks like the famous ‘Scottie-style’ sliders are back on the menu in 2026.
