Weld redistricting advisory committee names leadership, sets regular meeting dates

An advisory committee created to draw Weld Commissioner District boundaries will meet every Wednesday after selecting a chair and vice chair at its first meeting earlier this month.

The committee will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Weld County Administration building, 1150 O St. in Greeley, before proposing three potential maps to the commissioners June 30. Weld residents are encouraged to attend the meeting or provide comment on the redistricting committee webpage.

To provide input, or view more information on redistricting, go to Weld.gov. From there, hover over the “Government” header and select “Public Information Office” from the “Departments” column. Once on that page, a button that links to information on redistricting is about one-third down the page.

At a May 8 meeting, the committee named Adrienne Sandoval as the chair and Stacy Suniga as vice chair. Sandoval, a Republican, served as the mayor of Platteville for five years and recently ran for county commissioner. Suniga, a Democrat, is the president of the Latino Coalition of Weld County and previously held a spot on Greeley City Council.

Suniga was also a plaintiff in the lawsuit that sparked the committee being formed. On Oct. 23, 2024, the League of Women Voters Greeley Weld-County, the Latino Coalition of Weld County, as well as Suniga and Barbary Whinery, filed a complaint alleging the commissioners violated state law when redrawing district lines in 2023.

Last March, a Weld District judge ruled that the county did improperly draw the lines. The county filed an appeal in April, leading to the Colorado Supreme Court to hear the case in December.

In February, the Supreme Court upheld the Weld Judge’s ruling, requiring the county to redraw the districts ahead of the 2026 election.

The advisory committee’s next meeting will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 21.
