John David Washington is a successful actor in his own right—the Tenet star’s performance in BlacKkKlansman garnered him Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, and he starred in the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson.
But despite his critically acclaimed turn in Malcolm & Marie and 47-episode arc in HBO’s Ballers, Washington lives under the long shadow of his father, Oscar winner Denzel Washington, something that he addressed recently in an in-depth interview.

Before going into the family business, John David played professional football for the Sacramento Mountain Lions, which was then a part of the United Football League. Speaking with host Josh Horowitz on the Dec. 16 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, John David mused that perhaps part of his decision to delay his acting career in favor of athletics was to “protect myself.”
He said his life truly changed in 1992 when his father starred in Malcolm X. “You know, my dad got really popular, man. Like, he's the man,” said John David about Denzel’s rising star.
“As he got bigger, you know, I felt like society, or my world, changed and my relationship to it. People changed how they were treating me. So I felt this need to protect myself and felt the need to find my identity. So I found it through sports,” he continued.
John David shared that he “thought maybe I'd take a back seat to the art or to acting, because I want them to know me for something else. I want them to just know me. I didn't realize that you can know me through the work, but I needed to go through what I did football-wise first. But I think stuff started to change after Malcolm X.”
