Call the Midwife season 14: Release date and latest news

Back in February 2023, it was confirmed that Call the Midwife would be returning for seasons 14 and 15, news which creator and writer Heidi Thomas was “overjoyed” by.

“Call the Midwife is the pride and joy of all who work on it, but it’s our fantastic, loyal audience that matters most,” she said.

“We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly, and I’m thrilled that we’re all heading into the 1970s together.”

Speaking in August 2022 about how long the BBC drama could run for, Thomas told RadioTimes.com: “The order of nuns on whom the Nonnatus nuns are based stay in the East End until 1976, but I think more importantly than that single historic fact is that of women’s lives and the lives of the working classes as well, because increasingly over the years we’ve written about them, which I think also brings in a fresh dynamic which is always changing.

“There are so many stories to tell, medically, socially, even emotionally, and I think we could keep on going.”

When filming on season 14 officially wrapped, the above photo of Stephen McGann and Natalie Quarry was shared on the show’s official social media accounts with the caption: “LATEST! It’s a wrap on Call the Midwife Series 14 filming!!

“We have just received this traditional ‘end slate’ clapperboard shot from the set of Call the midwife, where the very final scene of Series 14 has just been filmed!!!

“This year it was the turn of Stephen McGann (Dr Turner) and Natalie Quarry (Nurse Clifford) to bring the filming to a close with a VERY emotional story…”

Last season, Miss Higgins also learned that she has a grandson, which has “changed her life completely”.

“And I realised as soon as I came back, of course it can’t carry on as normal, that I’m actually the same person, but in a very different position now because a few people are privy to it, Dr Turner and Nurse Crane, and I’m never going to be the same again because a fundamental change has happened in her life.”

Glen went on to say that for Miss Higgins, it’s now about navigating “a new reality within that new discovery because… she’s lived a long life just with the grief and the memory of what happened”.

“And although her son has now died, she has at least been reunited with him and she has gained his son, and her life is enriched by that,” added Glen.

    “It’s changed her life completely.”

Other storylines we’d expect to feature are Nancy’s new romance, developments on Trixie and Matthew’s marriage and the status of their life in New York, Cyril’s personal life in light of Lucille remaining in the Caribbean, and the future of Nonnatus House, among others.
