Al-Sharaa visits France on Wednesday

The Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, will travel to France tomorrow, Wednesday, May 7, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron.

The French presidency reported today, Tuesday, May 6, that Macron will receive al-Sharaa in Paris, marking the first visit by al-Sharaa to Europe.

The French presidency added that Macron “will reaffirm France’s support for building a new Syria, a free, stable, and sovereign Syria that respects all components of Syrian society.”

According to the Élysée, “the meeting falls within the framework of France’s commitment to Syrians who aspire to peace and democracy,” stressing that Macron will repeat “his demands to the Syrian government, primarily regarding the stabilization of the region, especially Lebanon, as well as combating terrorism.”

Macron had stated on March 28 that he was ready to receive al-Sharaa if the Syrian government opened up to all civil society and committed to ensuring security to allow the return of Syrian refugees.

He continued, “The government that takes into account all components of Syrian civil society, and clearly and firmly fights terrorism, and facilitates the return of refugees, are the three elements on which the transition will be judged.”

He noted that based on developments, France would be willing to continue dialogue and receive the Syrian transitional president, clarifying that the discussions held so far have been “very positive.”

The Syrian president received a phone call from Macron on February 5, inviting him to visit France.

Macron expressed his support for the transitional phase in Syria, reiterating his country’s efforts to lift sanctions, paving the way for growth and recovery.

For his part, al-Sharaa assured Macron that Syria would be a “positive” and active part of the region and the world, focusing on its interests in stability and territorial integrity.

Al-Sharaa spoke about the challenges posed by economic sanctions and the non-completion of Syrian territorial unity, referring to northeastern Syria.

Since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, France has led efforts to open communication and establish relations with the new Syria, with the French Foreign Minister being the first European minister to visit Damascus alongside German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on January 3.

Paris also hosted a conference on February 13 aimed at supporting Syria, which reaffirmed a collective desire to work together to ensure the success of the transitional process in post-Assad Syria, in a process that must be led and owned by Syrians, in the spirit of the fundamental principles of Security Council Resolution 2254, empowering the Syrian people to build a safer and more peaceful future.
