Elf is full of countless iconic lines that remain a part of the cultural lexicon even twenty years later, but one beloved moment from the classic Christmas flick was almost cut from the final product.
In a new interview with People, Mark Acheson, who you'll recognize as "Mailroom Guy," revealed that he was only meant to have two words in his iconic scene with Will Ferrell after Buddy is sent to work in the mailroom in his father's office building.
"Work release" was supposed to be the end of it, but after director Jon Favreau requested the two spend some time improvising with one another, things quickly devolved into "the weirdest day [Acheson] could possibly imagine."
Acheson, who was 46 at the time, came up with the line about being 26 years old with "nothing to show for it," leading Ferrell to reply, "You're young, you're so young."
Nobody has ever believed Acheson or his character was 26 at the time, with the actor explaining, "I mean, seriously. I believe I was 46 at the time and an older 46 even, at that. Because I never looked young in my life."
Because of that, the "producers wanted to axe the whole scene," but Favreau "fought for it," getting the joke of it all—which was lucky for Acheson, who says "it changed [his] career quite a bit."
Though the film came out in 2003, fans are still calling on the scene today, with one recently joking that "now more than ever i relate to the elf mailroom guy who is inexplicably 26 years old."
It sure is hard to imagine how things would have moved along if they just glossed right over everything that happens in the mail room!
