Non-negotiable right: Iran rejects US nuclear curbs

Shafaq News/ Iran will not abandon its uranium enrichment program under any circumstances, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday, rejecting renewed US calls for curbs on Tehran’s nuclear and missile activities.

Speaking to Iran’s state television, Araghchi emphasized that uranium enrichment is a non-negotiable right under international law. “All countries are entitled to pursue a peaceful civilian nuclear program. Iran will not give up its enrichment efforts,” he stated, reiterating that Tehran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons.

Araghchi also confirmed that he had relayed Iran’s position directly to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, stating that Iran would not accept US demands to cease enrichment or to import enriched uranium from abroad.

Under the 2015 nuclear agreement, Iran agreed to limit enrichment to 3.67% purity and cap its stockpile at 300 kilograms. But following the US withdrawal from the deal in 2018, Tehran gradually ramped up its nuclear program. As of May 2025, Iran is enriching uranium to 60% and possesses over 8,000 kilograms of enriched material, according to Iranian officials.

US Secretary of State and Acting National Security Adviser Marco Rubio reiterated Washington’s conditions during an interview Friday with Fox News. “Iran must stop enriching uranium, developing long-range missiles, and supporting terrorist groups including the Houthis in Yemen,” Rubio said.

He insisted that Iran must import enriched uranium for its civilian program and accept intrusive inspections, including access to military facilities. “If you can enrich to 3.67%, you can reach 20%, then 60%, and within weeks—90% weapons-grade,” he warned.

Rubio’s comments came as Oman announced the postponement of the fourth round of nuclear negotiations between the US and Iran, which had been scheduled for Saturday.
