Mysterious objects have illuminated the night skies over New Jersey and other US states, leaving residents in search of answers.
While US authorities have said the unidentified flying objects are not believed to pose a danger to the public or national security, they have not provided any further information.
On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed the sightings involved drones. “There’s no question … people are seeing drones,” he said.
“And I want to assure the American public that we, in the federal government, have deployed additional resources, personnel, technology, to assist… in addressing the drone sightings.”
The sightings began on 18 November in New Jersey, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Flying objects have since been spotted in at least six states — New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Virginia — with thousands of reported sightings, according to Mayorkas.

Here are some of the theories…
The objects were first spotted near Picatinny Arsenal – a US military research and manufacturing facility – and over Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. On Friday, the president-elect called for them to be shot down.
“Mystery drone sightings all over the country,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge? I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!”
Congressman Jeff Van Drew blamed the reports on an “Iranian mothership”, claiming: “I’ve learned, for real, that there is circumstantial evidence that there’s an Iranian mothership off the east coast of the United States, and that’s launching these drone incursions.
He accused the Pentagon of “dealing with the American public like we’re stupid.”
However, the Pentagon dismissed the theory. Its deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh tol ABC News there “is not any truth to that — there is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there’s no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States”.
The US Department of Defence said in a statement: “The FBI, DHS [Department of Homeland Security], FAA and DoD [Department of Defence] have been unable to determine who is responsible for flying the drones, and there’s no indication that there are adversary nations involved.”
Conspiracy theories
America’s conspiracy theorists have wasted no time speculating aboutthey call unidentified flying objects (UFOs) or unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs).
Alex Jones, – who once falsely claimed the Sandy Hook shootings were staged – has previously posted about Project Blue Beam, a theory that alleges, without evidence, that global elites are planning to stage fake supernatural events to deceive nations into uniting under a world government.
Alex Jones ( Tyler Sizemore/Hearst Connecticut Media via AP)Many conspiracy theorists on online platform X have pushed this disinformation, with one user posting: “The drones thing is spreading, it’s fear spreading by design in exactly the same way Covid slowly gained momentum until finally nations were controlled. This isn’t an alien invasion, it’s a planned operation against humanity #ProjectBlueBeam.”
Another conspiracy theory circulating on social media comes from John Ferguson, who runs aviation company Saxon Unmanned.
He posted on TikTok: “So my belief is they’re trying to smell something on the ground – gas leaks, radioactive material, whatever.” He went on to claim the radiation could be from leftover nuclear warheads from Ukraine that “went missing”.
“The only reason why you would ever fly an unmanned aircraft at night is if you’re looking for something,” he added.
He later admitted he had no evidence for this claim and was just offering his opinion.

The US consumer drone market was valued at $1.48bn (£1.17bn) in 2023 and is anticipated to grow by 10 per cent each year until 2030, according to Grand View Research.
The Homeland Security Secretary noted that more than one million drones are registered in the US, telling ABC News: “There are thousands of drones flown every day in the United States, recreational drones, commercial drones.”
Often, they are used for aerial photography or videography, and are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use.
In Massachusetts, two people have been charged with trespassing after allegedly conducting a “hazardous drone operation” near the airspace of Boston’s main airport on Saturday evening.
It is also possible that a single drone has been reported multiple times, inflating the number of objects spotted.
Planes
Officials say that many of the objects may be planes. New Jersey is a region with a number of airports and air bases and a huge amount of air traffic overhead and visible towards the borizons.
Aviation experts have pointed out that the movement of planes and helicopters can be deceptive when seen from different angles and distances on the ground. When combined with the blinking lights of air traffic, the aircraft can appear to be mysterious objects moving in outlandish ways.
AI
Many of the videos on social media may have been AI-generated, adding to the hysteria.
Public officials have been accused of allowing conspiracy theories and misinformation to explode by failing to provide clear messaging.
Congressman Mike Waltz of Florida, recently chosen as the incoming White House national security adviser, said the sightings highlight significant gaps in co-ordination between local law enforcement and federal agencies.
