South Africa players exit before IPL 2025 playoffs blocked by BCCI despite CSA lobbying

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is reportedly not willing to grant No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for their players for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal stated that discussions are ongoing with Cricket South Africa (CSA) regarding players' availability for all matches in the season.

CSA has confirmed that its players participating in IPL 2025 will leave the tournament ahead of the playoffs to focus on preparing for the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia. A total of eight South African cricketers from IPL 2025 have been named in the WTC final squad.

In a conversation with the Times of India, Arun Dhumal said that talks are ongoing with Cricket South Africa. He mentioned that they have asked CSA to allow players not part of the WTC squad to remain in the IPL and also requested permission for those willing to stay for the full tournament to do so.

"We are discussing it with CSA. They have the World Test Championship final from June 11. They have qualified for the first time. It’s very important for them. We have requested them to let the players who are not selected to stay back and let the players who are willing to stay back for the entire tournament," Arun Dhumal told TOI.

The IPL 2025 was suspended for a week due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Notably, the match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) was halted halfway. The IPL 2025 will resume on May 17, and the league stage will now conclude on May 27, with the final match set for June 3.

8 IPL 2025 Players Included in South Africa’s Squad for WTC Final

Kagiso Rabada (Gujarat Titans), Marco Jansen (Punjab Kings), Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton (Mumbai Indians), Tristan Stubbs (Delhi Capitals), Aiden Markram (Lucknow Super Giants), Wiaan Mulder (SunRisers Hyderabad), and Lungi Ngidi (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) have been selected for the WTC squad.

The players will depart for the country on May 27 and then join the full WTC squad in the UK on May 30 to prepare for their warm-up match against Zimbabwe in Arundel, scheduled from June 3 to 6. While SRH is out of the IPL 2025 playoffs, the other players remain in contention for the IPL playoffs.

South Africa to Play in Their First-Ever WTC Final

Proteas are set to play in their first-ever ICC World Test Championship final next month. The Temba Bavuma-led team topped the WTC 2023-25 standings, securing eight victories and three losses. Their campaign included series wins against Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

The Proteas will have a tough opponent in Australia. Notably, the Aussies, who finished the cycle with 13 wins from 19 matches, are the reigning WTC champions. They had convincingly beaten India by 209 runs in the previous WTC final.

The title clash at Lord’s promises to be an exciting encounter between two quality sides, with South Africa looking to clinch their first WTC crown and Australia aiming to defend their title.
