UEFA Euro 2024: Germany vs Scotland 5-1

The UEFA Euro 2024 match between Germany and Scotland ended with a resounding 5-1 victory for the German national team. This result was not only a display of Germany's dominance on the field but also highlighted the challenges faced by the Scottish team in international competition.

Germany's performance in this match was nothing short of impressive, with their attacking prowess on full display throughout the game. The German players exhibited excellent teamwork, precision passing, and clinical finishing, which ultimately led to their five-goal haul.

Goals from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala in an imperious first half set Germany on the way to a confidence-boosting 5-1 win over 10-man Scotland in the Euro 2024 curtainraiser on Friday.

While Germany didn’t really have to break sweat against a sub-par Scotland at Allianz Arena, it was the ideal result to launch its tournament and ramp up excitement in the country.

“Yes, that’s exactly the way we wanted to start and, to be honest, we needed a start just like that,” Germany captain İlkay Gündoğan told German broadcaster ZDF. “I had a good feeling before the game already, to be honest, and it came true, thank God.

Germany had gone into the tournament behind France, England and Portugal as favourites to emerge as winners following a turbulent period under Nagelsmann and his sacked predecessor Hansi Flick. Group stage exits at the previous two World Cups, and a round-of-16 elimination against England at Euro 2020, had left Germany fearing a difficult tournament as they attempt to become European champions for the first time since 1996. But the tension and apprehension among the home supporters evaporated within the first 10 minutes, as Bayer Leverkusen youngster Wirtz netted the opening goal following neat buildup play between Toni Kroos, Ilkay Gundogan and Joshua Kimmich.

Scotland hasn’t played a European Championship match abroad since 1992 and its supporters, nicknamed the Tartan Army, are making the most of it.

“It feels as if most of the country are (here),” Scotland captain Andy Robertson said.

In the buildup to the Euro 2024 opener against Germany, fans wearing kilts and waving Scottish flags have been dancing and singing as the sound of bagpipes fills the air.

Many have filled pubs and bars but no trouble has been reported, with the Scots largely creating a joyous atmosphere as they revel in a rare opportunity to travel overseas to see their team play in a major tournament.
