In a move that has sent shockwaves through the NFL, star running back Ezekiel Elliott has signed a lucrative deal to remain with the Dallas Cowboys for the 2024 season. The deal, reportedly worth over $100 million, solidifies Elliott's status as one of the highest-paid players in the league.
Elliott's decision to stay with the Cowboys comes as a relief to fans who have grown accustomed to his electrifying performances on the field. Known for his speed, power, and agility, Elliott has been a key player for the Cowboys since being drafted in 2016.
Ezekiel Elliott is preparing to suit up for the Dallas Cowboys — the two sides agreeing to terms on a deal for the 2024 season that will help stabilize the team's depth chart at running back.
"We are keenly interested in seeing what the future might look like with Zeke," said owner and general manager Jerry Jones following Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft.
It's a depth chart that, to now, has been slathered with question marks following the departure of Tony Pollard in free agency and the amount of unproven, inexperienced young talent behind Rico Dowdle, who re-signed this offseason on a one-year deal.
Nonetheless, Elliott's return to Dallas should offer some plusses beyond just nostalgia. The former two-time rushing champion, who was taken fourth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cowboys, still has a nose for the end zone and is a usually sterling pass protector.
Even if the Cowboys had selected a running back, they were still going to add Elliott, who was a salary cap casualty of Dallas' roster last year before eventually signing with the New England Patriots.
Elliott played 51% of the offensive snaps and -- running behind a mix-and-match offensive line -- finished with a team-high 642 yards on 184 carries (3.5 average) with three touchdowns. He added a team-high 51 receptions for 313 yards (6.1 average) and two touchdowns.
The massive reduction in Elliott's salary is reflective of the running back market, but also of Elliott's performance level. He's not nearly as productive now as he was even just two years ago. He hasn't run for 1,000 yards since 2021 and averaged just under 38 yards per game in 2023. But Zeke is comfortable in Dallas. If he has more to give, the Cowboys are the team to get it out of him.
