In a highly anticipated LaLiga match, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid battled to a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. The clash between these two fierce rivals lived up to its expectations, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination throughout the game.
The first half saw both teams creating numerous chances, but it was Atletico who struck first blood. In the 15th minute, striker Luis Suarez capitalized on a defensive error from Real Madrid and slotted the ball into the back of the net. The goal sent shockwaves through the home team's defense, but they quickly regrouped and started mounting attacks of their own.
Brahim Diaz, who replaced the hurt Vinicius Junior at late notice before the game, opened the scoring for Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Llorente's leveller means Madrid are two points clear of Girona, who drew against Real Sociedad on Saturday, and 10 points above Atletico, fourth.
Catalan minnows Girona visit Real Madrid next weekend in a crunch title showdown made even juicier by Llorente's vital contribution.
"We worked so hard during the whole game and at the end took this prize, a point, and stopped them from getting more, just one," Llorente told Movistar.
Instead, Atleti’s cautious mentality hemmed the visitors in their own half, and it was Diaz, Jude Bellingham and Ferland Mendy who all went close with early efforts.
Atletico broke into home territory for the first time in the ninth minute as Antoine Griezmann tested Andriy Lunin with an effort from a tight angle, but it was Diaz who opened the scoring, and deservedly so for the league leaders 11 minutes later.
Diaz was persistence and calmness personified as his initial pass ricocheted into the path of Lucas Vazquez, whose cut-back towards Bellingham bounced kindly off Koke into Diaz, who had continued his bundle into the box.
Atletico had chances too. Real Madrid keeper Andriy Lunin, who has recently taken Kepa's place in the team, made a brilliant save to keep out Axel Witsel's header and later stopped Griezmann's flicked effort.
This was the third meeting of the rivals in 2024, with Real winning 5-3 in extra time in the Spanish Super Cup and Atletico triumphing 4-2 after extra time in the Copa del Rey.
The draw for Carlo Ancelotti's side takes them two points clear of surprise package Girona, who drew 0-0 with Real Sociedad on Saturday.
Defending champions Barcelona are another six points back, while Atletico are 10 points off top.
