Rapper Killer Mike arrested after winning three awards

In a shocking turn of events, renowned rapper Killer Mike was arrested shortly after his triumphant win at the prestigious music awards ceremony. The artist, known for his thought-provoking lyrics and social activism, had just received three well-deserved accolades for his groundbreaking album. However, the joyous celebration quickly turned into a somber affair as he found himself in handcuffs.

The incident unfolded when Killer Mike was leaving the venue amidst a sea of adoring fans and flashing cameras. Reports suggest that an altercation broke out between the rapper's entourage and an overzealous paparazzo. In an attempt to protect his team, Killer Mike intervened, resulting in a physical confrontation that escalated rapidly.

The Los Angeles Police Department said a man was detained and handcuffed Sunday afternoon in connection with a "physical altercation." He was later placed under arrest and taken to LAPD’s Central Division, the department said on X.

Police identified the man as Michael Render, which is Killer Mike's real name. He was booked on a charge of misdemeanor battery and was in the process of being released, police said Sunday night.

"I'm a Black man in America, and as a kid I had a dream to become a part of music. And that 9-year-old is excitedly dancing inside of me right now," he said in one of his acceptance speeches Sunday.

Beating rap heavyweights like Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Nicki Minaj, Killer Mike's wins Sunday — which were awarded before the prime-time Grammys broadcast began — marked his first Grammy trophies in over 20 years. He previously won Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 45th Grammy Awards for Outkast's "The Whole World."

Render was celebrating just before he was detained. “The only thing that limits your age is not being truthful about your age or what you’re doing,” he said backstage.

“At 20 years old, I thought it was cool to be a drug dealer,” he added. “At 40, I started to live with the regrets and the things I’ve done. At 45, I started to rap about it. At 48, I stand here as a man full of empathy and sympathy for the things I’ve done.”

Earlier in the afternoon, Killer Mike won three Grammy awards at the pre-show Premiere Ceremony, for best rap performance, best rap song and best rap album.

Representatives for Killer Mike and for the Grammys did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
