Johnstown, Windsor receive grants to improve safety of children getting to school

Two area communities aim to empower more children to walk, bike or roll to school after receiving federal funding through Safe Routes to School grants.

Johnstown received nearly $370,000 for infrastructure projects regarding Elwell Elementary and Windsor received nearly $180,000 for planning and education, according to a Colorado Department of Transportation news release.

The two grants are just a piece of nearly $8 million awarded by the federal government through CDOT for the 2025-26 fiscal year, the department said.

Johnstown’s $368,953 in funding will, at least in part, be put toward installing a high-intensity activated crosswalk, creating a safer, pedestrian-focused crossing at Colorado Boulevard near Elwell Elementary.

Windsor’s grant — in the amount of $178,021 — is slated to be used to create plans for safe travel routes to and from schools, implement bicycle and pedestrian education in schools, raise awareness through public communications and mobilize a task force coalition to sustain the initiative, according to a Colorado Department of Transportation news release.

Safe Routes to School is a federally funded reimbursement program established in 2005 to increase pedestrian safety awareness among motorists and schoolchildren. CDOT administers the program, according to the release.
