Sugar Bowl: Texas loss to Washington 37-31

The Sugar Bowl matchup between the Texas Longhorns and the Washington Huskies was a highly anticipated game, with both teams looking to end their seasons on a high note. However, it was Washington who emerged victorious, defeating Texas 37-31 in a thrilling contest.

From the outset, it was clear that this would be a closely contested battle. Both teams displayed exceptional skill and determination, making for an exciting game that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The Longhorns showcased their offensive prowess, with quarterback Sam Ehlinger leading the charge. Ehlinger's ability to make accurate throws and extend plays with his legs posed a constant threat to Washington's defense.

Texas' onside kick after its field goal failed, and the Washington Huskies tried to run out the clock, but the Longhorns caught a break when a Washington injury on third down forced the clock to stop with 50 seconds left. The Huskies punted it away, and as Jordan Whittington was hauling the ball in for a fair catch, a Washington player was flagged 15 yards for catch interference.

The Longhorns came into the contest with the No. 93 pass defense in college football, giving up an average of 250.8 yards per contest. The Huskies are even worse at No. 120 among 133 teams in the FBS, surrendering 263.2 passing yards per game.

While both teams were tied at halftime, and brought it down to the wire in the final quarter as Heisman Trophy candidate Michael Penix Jr. ultimately was the star as he gutted the Texas secondary, completing 76% of his passes for 430 yards and 2 touchdowns.

That set Texas up with its final chance: down 37-31, at its own 31-yard line with 45 seconds left and no timeouts to work with.

Quinn Ewers threw incomplete on first down, then missed Ja'Tavion Sanders near midfield on second down. On third down, Ewers hit Whittington for a big gain down to Washington's 28-yard line with 25 seconds to go.

This Sugar Bowl game may be a few minutes late to kickoff after Michigan and Alabama went to overtime in the earlier Rose Bowl game. The Wolverines went on to defeat the Crimson Tide 27-20 on the heels of a Blake Corum rushing touchdown and a goal line stand to remain undefeated. Michigan will face either Washington or Texas in the CFP Championship Title Game in Houston on January 8.
