Robert Kraft made decision to part ways with Bill Belichick after loss to Colts

Bill Belichick’s time with the New England Patriots is apparently coming to an end regardless of how the rest of the season plays out. The Patriots, according to NBC Sports Boston’s Tom Curran, have already decided to move on from the longtime coach after the end of the season.

That decision was apparently made after the Patriots fell to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany on Nov. 12.

Curran added that the parting of the ways could include a de facto trade of Belichick to a new team. That would explain the decision not to fire Belichick during the season.

Since the 10-6 loss to the Colts, the Patriots lost to the Giants and the Chargers before upsetting the Steelers last Thursday night.

Ultimately, Curran claimed that Belichick is beyond the point where he could save his job with the Patriots once the 2023 season ends.

“It had gone too far,” he explained. “The Germany game. The Commanders game. The Saints game. All huge, marquee games. And then there was the Chargers game after that.”

All of those games ended with the Patriots losing, a string of defeats that may have pushed Kraft toward a less lenient stance with the team’s longtime coach.

“Just because they won last week in Pittsburgh in primetime, I don’t think it quells anything.”

The Alabama product has been benched four times this season and was replaced by Bailey Zappe as the team's starting quarterback following a Week 12 loss to the New York Giants.

It's unclear if Jones will see the field again this season after he completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 2,120 yards and 10 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 11 games, going 2-9 in that span.

The Patriots sit last in the AFC East with a 3-10 record and have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

In addition to the team's quarterback issues, Belichick has received flack for making some questionable selections in the draft—just look at wide receiver N'Keal Harry—and for not signing better players at the skill positions and the offensive line.

Another important consideration becomes Belichick’s wishes. Does he want to stick around, or is he looking for a fresh start?

Again, nothing is done until it’s done. Whatever the decision might be, it can still be altered when the dust settles on the 2023 drsdon. At this point, it seems as if it would take a lot to keep Belichick in place — especially if he’s thinking that it’s time to make a change after nearly a quarter of a century in the same job.
