Andre Braugher, who starred as Captain Raymond Holt in the hit comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine and as Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, has died aged 61.
The actor died on Monday after a brief illness, his publicist confirmed.
Instantly recognisable for his deep voice, Braugher came to fame on the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street, which ran from 1992 to 1998. He won an Emmy for his portrayal of the tenacious, arrogant Detective Frank Pembleton in 1998.
But it was his performance as the deadpan Captain Raymond Holt in the hit comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine that made him most famous, appearing alongside Andy Samberg in eight seasons. He won two Critics Choice Awards for best supporting actor in a comedy series and received four Emmy nominations for his performance as Holt, the precinct’s no-nonsense, Black and gay boss.
The Chicago actor went on to land his break-out role as Detective Frank Pembleton on the 1993 TV police drama Homicide: Life on the Street.
Andre since appeared on an array of hit shows and films including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Law & Order: SVU.
Due to his outstanding acting career, Andre received many accolades including two Emmy Awards and two Critics Choice TV Awards.
According to his publicist Jennifer Allen, Braugher passed away after dealing with a "brief illness". Details as to which sickness caused the former Juilliard alumn's passing are yet to be released.
Andre Braugher's untimely passing also took what was going to be his next project with him, the Netflix show Residence , which was goin to begin filming early next year.
The talented actor is survived by his wife and actor Ami Brabson, as well as three children.
"This is impossible for me to process. He was [the] best actor in the world. An incredible human being. An incomprehensible loss," Royce said.
"Andre Braugher. Rest in peace. Loved watching him work. Anytime he entered a scene he commanded attention. Terrible loss and taken away from his family and friends way too soon," said actor Kirk Acevedo.
"Sad. I got to know Andre a little while doing the Brooklyn Nine-Nine pilot. He was a kind, thoughtful, supremely talented person," said filmmaker Chris Miller.
In his most recent stand-out performance, Braugher played the gay NYPD captain of the Nine-Nine precinct, Raymond Holt, in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. For his role, Andre Braugher earned four Primetime Emmy nominations for the Supporting Actor category. He also won two Critics Choice Awards for his performance in the series.
