Drama continues to swirl around the Michigan football program. But through it all, the Wolverines just keep on winning.
Ahead of Saturday's "Big Noon Kickoff" matchup at Maryland, Bruce Feldman offered an update on the situation, talking about Harbaugh’s future with the university.
All told, the Wolverines defense held the Terrapins to just 15 rushing yards while recording a fumble recovery, two interceptions, a blocked punt, two safeties, four sacks and six tackles for loss and contributed 10 points of its own.
Offensively, U-M relied on the ground game for a second straight week, totaling 150 rushing yards. Running back Blake Corum ran for 94 yards on 28 carries and found the end zone twice in the win.
Early on, the Michigan rushing attack was on display, carrying the ball seven straight times and finding the end zone on its second drive. Corum ran the ball six times for 39 yards on the drive, including the two-yard score.
Offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore has guided the Wolverines to victories over Penn State and Maryland (6-5, 3-5) these past two weeks, and he's set to replace Harbaugh at the helm next weekend as well.
Harbaugh also served a school-imposed, three-game suspension to start the season for an NCAA recruiting infractions case.
Michigan had a defensive touchdown and two safeties against Maryland, but the Wolverines allowed more points than they had all season. Michigan's defense did stiffen when it needed to. A sack by Kenneth Grant in the fourth quarter forced the Terps into a third-and-18 situation that led to Sainristil's second interception of the day.
the end of the half saw momentum shift. Maryland marched down the field on a 14-play touchdown drive, with backup quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. thrusting his way over the goal line. Edwards, who only fielded snaps in goal-to-go scenarios, finished with a peculiar stat line of four rushes, three yards and three touchdowns.
With Michigan threatening to diminish the Terps’ momentum, Maryland’s defense stood tall. The Wolverines advanced within Maryland’s 10-yard line late in the first half, but linebacker Jaishawn Barham recorded his first career interception. Then came another defensive stand, and Maryland had a chance to take the lead against the two-time reigning conference champions.
That was when Tagovailoa’s first interception arrived. The Wolverines scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive. It looked like the Maryland many have become accustomed to seeing against teams of Michigan’s caliber, and the Tagovailoa whose mistakes have cost his team dearly in those contests.
Michigan entered the season already on top of the list of most wins in college football history, and in second place is rival Ohio State and Alabama. It'll be awhile before either school will join Michigan as college football teams to reach 1,000 wins, as the earliest it could be done is in 2024 for Ohio State. However, the Buckeyes would need to win three-straight undefeated national championship seasons.
