ESPN soccer analyst Shaka Hislop is “OK” and conscious after collapsing on air about six minutes before the kickoff of AC Milan’s friendly match with Real Madrid at the Rose Bowl in California on Sunday, according to his co-host.
Hislop and co-host Dan Thomas appeared on the air before a friendly match between AC Milan and Real Madrid. During the live segment, Hislop can be seen wobbling before losing his balance and keeling forward. Thomas calls out his name before saying, “We need some help.”Hislop was on camera alongside his co-host Dan Thomas, who was speaking during pre-match coverage when Hislop stumbled forward, bumped into Thomas and fell to the ground, video shows.
Thomas could be seen immediately calling for the medical staff before the broadcast cut to commercials.
“He has recovered,” commentator Adrian Healey said on the sports networks broadcast of the match. “I didn’t see the incident … but I’m sure it was an alarming one. We’ve been told in definitive terms that he is OK.”
Hislop had a long career as a goalkeeper in England, playing for West Ham, Newcastle and Portsmouth as well as the Trinidad and Tobago national team. He joined ESPN as an analyst in 2008 and is a regular contributor for ESPN FC.
“As you can imagine, seeing that happen live, there can’t be many more things that can scare you amongst a family, but we spoke to his wife and things are looking OK,” Thomas said.
Hislop, 54, played soccer professionally for 15 years, and was the starting goalie for Trinidad and Tobago’s men’s national team during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He played in Europe for Newcastle United, West Ham and Portsmouth before playing two seasons with FC Dallas in Major League Soccer. He retired in 2007.
“He’s conscious he’s talking. I think he’s a little embarrassed about it all he says he’s apologized profusely — not a man who likes people to make a fuss of him,” Thomas said on-air. “Obviously, far too early to make any sort of diagnosis but the important thing is that Shaka is conscious. And we spoke to his family as well, because you imagine seeing that happen live there can’t be many more things that can scare you amongst the family.”
Thomas said that they spoke to Hislop’s wife and said “Things are looking OK.”
