ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at only two years old, Chad Williams, has had to overcome many obstacles that many runners never face.
Cerebral palsy affects movement, muscle tone, and posture. For Williams, it has meant years of physical therapy and daily perseverance to manage routine tasks.
Williams is preparing for the Boilermaker 15K Road Race in Utica on July 13, with his 17-year-old son, Chad Michael Williams, by his side.
In 2022, Williams challenged himself by starting to run, beginning with a 5K that included 20 obstacles. He soon realized he was as capable as other runners and eventually participated in his first Boilermaker race.
“Just because there’s battles doesn’t mean you have to stop, you can keep going, and it was an inspiration for me,” said Chad Michael Williams.
Running the Boilermaker with his son adds a new layer of pride for Williams, celebrating both his journey and the legacy of strength he is passing on.
“Everybody has stuff they have to work through, this is my battle and the things that I’m working through,” said Williams. “But at some point along the line, he’s probably gonna have his own stuff to work through, and I hope he can take something away from this you know. He can see the things that I’ve had to work through and I didn’t give up, I continued to push forward.”
