ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The 22nd Annual International Rochester Festival kicked off tonight in downtown Rochester, drawing hundreds to enjoy music, food, drinks and community.
Rita Sciortino and Kahmil Monk George have been working in the VIP section and private events at the festival for almost four years. They said they love every minute of it.
“I like the Rochester community. I like how it brings all types of people of different backgrounds together for one purpose, listen to great music and it’s great community building,” Sciortino said.
“Jazz fest is my favorite time to work at Mags. Because it’s so lively, we get to listen to live music. It’s good weather, good people. I love it,” said Monk George.
Nate France, a 16-year-old trumpeter and student at Webster Schrader High School, performed at the festival. He said he wasn’t nervous playing in front of the crowd.
“It feels good. It feels good. All I’m feeling while I’m up there is just playing the notes and having a good time. Just enjoying the experience, the moment,” France said.
“When I was up there, I saw people dancing, it was good knowing that we were able to play that well,” he added. Mike and Francine Velazquez, festival veterans, have been attending for roughly 16 years. They were eagerly waiting in line to see Caity Gyorgy, a three-time Juno Award-winning Canadian vocalist.
“Listening to her music and finding out she was going to be here. I had to come, I had to come,” Mike Velazquez said. “If you are into Latin jazz, come see Ocon tonight at the big tent,” Francine Lucas Velazquez said. “Ohhh yeah, nothing but Jazz, we love it.”
Nathaniel France and the Webster Schrader High School Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Gibb Street Stage on Monday.
