Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Sarasota Sharks’ David Melnychuk has announced his commitment to swim for the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Melnychuk will arrive on campus for the Tar Heels in the fall of 2025.

“I am so honored and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at UNC Chapel Hill. I would like to thank God, my parents and friends, my Sarasota Sharks coaches, and Coach Mark for giving me this opportunity and supporting me through this process. Go Tar Heels.”

Melnychuk is primarily a backstroker and made finals in both backstroke events at the 2024 Winter Junior Championships – East. He earned third in the 200 backstroke with a lifetime best 1:42.50. Earlier in the meet, he placed 19th in the ‘C’ final of the 100 backstroke with a 47.92.

He wrapped up his high-school seasons at the 2024 FHSAA Class 4A State Championship, earning second in the 200 freestyle with a personal best 1:37.98 and third in the 100 backstroke with a then-personal best of 48.28.

Melnychuk has made big strides in his primary events from the 2023 yards season. From December 2023 to December 2024, he took exactly two seconds off his lifetime best in the 100 backstroke and 5.18 seconds in the 200 backstroke.

His time drops have continued into the new long-course season. Melnychuk won the 200-meter backstroke at the Southern Zone South Sectional Championships with a lifetime best 2:01.57. He was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a lifetime best 56.96 and took eighth in the 50 freestyle after swimming a personal best 24.14 in prelims.

Best Times (SCY):

200 backstroke: 1:42.50 100 backstroke: 47.92 200 freestyle: 1:37.98 100 freestyle: 44.76

The UNC men had a strong 2024-25 season. Even with newcomers Cal and Stanford placing first and second at their first ACC Championships, the Tar Heel men logged their best finish at the meet since 2016, taking fourth with 852 points and continuing to rewrite their school record book. The historic finishes continued at the NCAA Championships, setting eight school records en route to a 23rd place finish, their best since 2015.

Melnychuk adds scoring potential to the team at the conference level. His lifetime best in the 200 backstroke would’ve made the ‘C’ final this season. He needs to drop a little over a second in the 100 backstroke to get within scoring range based on this season’s times.

A huge factor in the UNC men’s success this season was not only recruiting well, but developing those recruits. Melnychuk will aim to continue that trend along with the rest of the UNC men’s class of 2029, including Benton Grutter, Sam Huggins, and Granger Bartee.
