‘Just jump in’ – Travis Kelce reveals retirement decision after one crucial factor secured Chiefs return

Travis Kelce’s NFL career may be edging ever closer to reaching its conclusion.

The 2025 NFL season will be the Kansas City Chiefs tight end’s 13th — and likely final — campaign.

He has just one year left on his two-year, $34.3 million deal and the 35-year-old, who is one of three founders of Tight End University along with George Kittle and Greg Olsen, hinted that his future beyond the 2025 season is uncertain.

“It is the last one on the contract,” Kelce said on the Bussin’ With the Boys Podcast.

“I am focused on this one. I do not know what next year is going to feel like. I do not know what I am going to feel like in March and April of next year, when I make that decision, or I try to figure out what is next for me.

“But I know that I got one on the contract, and I got a team and got a lot of talent. I am pumped for it.”

The beau of pop sensation Taylor Swift has been an integral member of the Chiefs’ dynasty under head coach Andy Reid, along with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and defensive tackle, Chris Jones.

Kansas City ended a 50-year drought when they clinched Super Bowl LIV in the 2019 season.

Since then, the Chiefs have made four Super Bowl appearances in five years, coming out victorious again in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

However, they narrowly missed out on securing the three-peat in 2024 after a 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX.

The manner in which the Vince Lombardi Trophy slipped away from their grasp left Kelce and co extremely dissatisfied.

With a renewed fire inside of him, that disappointment has ultimately left the 10-time Pro Bowler with a hunger to exit the game on better terms, diminishing any thoughts of retirement this year.

“It might have made me think about it a little bit more,” Kelce said.

“I just had a sour taste in my mouth immediately, and like, man, this cannot be the last game, you know.

“I still feel like I can do it. And I kind of wanted to give myself that full focus when I kind of looked at the year in review and how I got ready for the year and things like that.”

Kelce is no doubt a future Hall of Fame inductee, with a career that has seen him firmly in the conversation for being one of the greatest tight ends of all-time.

The Big Yeti, as he is known, has racked up 12,151 receiving yards and 77 touchdowns in his career.

Having reached 11,000 yards quicker than any other tight end in NFL history, Kelce is on course to pass Tony Gonzalez (15,127 yards) for the most all-time.

Another legendary tight end, Rob Gronkowski even admitted that Kelce’s career has led to him questioning his own place in the all-time list.

However, the 2024 season saw Kelce experience a significant decrease in production, with a career-low 823 yards from 97 receptions, and a mere three touchdowns in the regular season.

Somewhat signifying that his body is slowing down, Mahomes’ long-time number one target may not see the field in the 2026 season and beyond.

As such, Kelce will likely play every game of the 2025 campaign as if it is his last, and with a point to prove.

Therefore, it can be expected that he will push his body to its absolute limit with just one goal in mind: to achieve Super Bowl glory one last time.
