‘Really bad’ – Stefanos Tsitsipas slammed by coach and Wimbledon champion in damning assessment

Stefanos Tsitsipas has been criticised for a lack of preparation by his coach Goran Ivanisevic after an early exit at Wimbledon.

The two-time Grand Slam finalist was losing 6-3 6-2 against qualifier Valentin Royer when he withdrew from their first round clash.

Tsitsipas retired before the third set due to a back injury and now has just one win from four matches at major tournaments in 2025.

He announced the appointment of Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon in 2001, as his new coach in May.

But the former Croatian star has been left less than impressed by his latest client and revealed his surprise at Tsitsipas’ lack of readiness.

“It’s simple and it’s not easy. I’ve talked to him a lot of times,” he said in an interview with Croatian news outlet Sport Klub.

“If he resolves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and will return to where he belongs, because he’s too good a player to be out of the top ten.

“He wants to, but he doesn’t do anything. All the, ‘I want, I want’, but I don’t see any progress. I was shocked.

“I’ve never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I’m three times more prepared than him. This is really bad.”

Tsitsipas’ early exit at Wimbledon has come amid reports from Spain that he and women’s world no. 9 Paula Badosa have split up again.

HOLA.com say that sources close to the couple have confirmed their break-up, with one saying: “The break-up just happened.

“They both lost in the first round in London and everything has come together for them.”

Tsitsipas revealed last year that his father Apostolos would no longer be his coach, to ensure that he is kept ‘only as a father’.

Dimitris Chatzinikolaou then took the reins until Ivanisevic, who spent five years as coach to Novak Djokovic.

The record 24-time men’s singles Grand Slam champion won nine of his titles when working with him from 2019 to 2024.

Tsitsipas has become Ivanisevic’s sixth student but endured a tough start to major tournaments under his guidance.

He entered Wimbledon as the 24th seed and without an appearance past the fourth round across his past seven visits.

Defeat to Royer has been just one of a number shock results to have kept the tournament wide open in 2025.

Half of the top ten seeds – Alexander Zverev, Jack Draper, Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev – have all crashed out.

Carlos Alcaraz has kept his title defence going, though, and next faces Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round later on Friday.
