Rochester coach to represent USMNT Amputee Soccer Team

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The World Amputee Football Federation World Cup is set to take place next year, and Rochester has a connection to the international tournament. Darren Wynne, a soccer coach originally from Dublin, has been living in Rochester for 20 years and will oversee the defense for the U.S. team at the World Cup qualifier in Costa Rica.

“I love football, that’s what we call it back home,” Wynne said. He has built several college programs, including Bryant & Stratton Rochester, where his team won a national championship in 2023.

Nico Calabria, team captain and one of the amputees representing the U.S., praised Wynne. “He’s a proper bloke,” Calabria joked. He added, “I think all of the guys were really excited to have him join the coaching staff, which is just becoming stronger as time goes on.”

Wynne expressed his pride in representing the United States. “I’ve been here 20 years in the United States, and this country has given me so much. And so it’s a natural progression for me to be able to represent the country that I love so much,” Wynne said.

Calabria shared his journey, saying, “I was born with one leg and I’ve been playing soccer on crutches my whole life, but I didn’t play my first match of soccer until I went to Mexico when I was 16 years old.”

Wynne and Calabria will travel to Mexico on Sunday for the North and Central America qualifier. Despite not being an amputee himself, Wynne hopes to bring an amputee soccer team to Rochester.
