Tyson Fury was over the moon to hear that Tom Aspinall had been crowned the new undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.
On Saturday night, company president Dana White confirmed that Jon Jones had retired from the sport, resulting in long-suffering interim title holder Aspinall being elevated to full world champion.
Shortly after White’s bombshell announcement, Aspinall took to social media to post a photo of himself with his belt, alongside the caption: “For you, fans. It’s time to get this heavyweight division going. An active Undisputed Champion.”
Beaming with pride, Fury shared the update to his Instagram story, with an ecstatic five-word message: “Get up [there], my boy!”
Aspinall sparred with Fury several times while they were both being trained by Tyson’s uncle Peter Fury in the early to mid-2010s.
The Mancunian has nothing but good things to say about Tyson and even credits ‘The Gypsy King’ with helping him conquer the mental side of combat sports.
“I trained at Team Fury for, altogether, about 18 months or two years every day,” he said back in 2022.
“That experience was just fantastic. Before I trained there, I was in my early 20s and took it a bit too seriously.
“If I would make a mistake in a gym or in a fight, I would really take it to heart and get down on myself.
“Then, when I went over to train with the Furys, especially around Tyson, he would take it just as a sport and not too seriously.
“He would mess around a lot and really enjoy his training.
“It was nice to be around that. I learned a lot, technically.

Fury has been one of Aspinall’s biggest supporters throughout his MMA career, and told everyone who would listen that his former sparring partner would become the first man to legitimately beat Jones.
Unfortunately, Jones’ retirement means we will never truly know the answer.
Up until the American’s decision to walk away from the sport, White assured the media that a fight would be made between Jones and Aspinall.
According to esteemed MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Jones initially accepted terms before going back on his word.
He then phoned White over the weekend to officially relinquish his belt.
