As one of the most bankable movie stars of the modern era and a prominent former politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger has many different views about the current state of American politics and the ongoing issues plaguing California.
Appearing on a recent episode of The View, the 77-year-old Schwarzenegger didn't hold back when it came to his own views surrounding immigration, ICE, and the fragile situation developing within Los Angeles, a city nearing its second consecutive week of anti-government protests.
During his interview on the program, host Joy Behar said to Schwarzenegger, "You are an immigrant yourself -- an immigrant of the country. Did you have a visceral reaction to what they're doing -- what ICE is doing?"
Schwarzenegger, who immigrated from Austria in 1968 when he was 21-years-old, answered by reflecting on his pleasant experiences moving to the U.S., saying, "I'm so proud and happy that I was embraced by the American people like that."
In further evaluating the sensitive issue, Schwarzenegger then pointed out that those immigrating to American cities need to be respectful of the rules and customs surrounding life in the U.S., likening it to being "a guest" in the country.
“Those people that are doing illegal things in America, and they’re the foreigners, they are not smart,” Schwarzenegger said. “Because when you come to America, you’re a guest, and you have to behave like a guest."
When pressed on how he'd handle the recent issue if he were still governor, Schwarzenegger (who served as the Republican governor of California from 2003 to 2011) emphasized the importance of both political parties working together to reach a mutually beneficial comprise.
“I think the most important thing is, when you are in a leadership position like that, is that you are inclusive and that you work together with everybody,” the Terminator actor observed.
“It means that you have to work together with local government, the state government and the federal government they have to work together rather than fighting each other," he continued.
