Will Ferrell may have an apology to make to Chelsea fans after his hand in their most successful manager getting fired.
The comedy legend is a co-owner at Los Angeles FC, who are the Blues’ first opponents in the revamped Club World Cup.
Yet Chelsea fans certainly weren’t laughing when a joke about Jose Mourinho came at a bad time in 2015.
Mourinho is the London side’s greatest ever coach with eight honours to his name over two separate stints.
The second spell came to an end in 2015, just shortly after Ferrell mocked him at an awards ceremony.
The Anchorman and Step Brothers icon poked fun at Mourinho’s tactics at the GQ Men of the Year awards right in front of his face.
After impersonating his accent and repeating ‘Jose Mourinho’, Ferrell laughed: “Keep playing defence man.
“Keep playing seven guys in the box, I love it!”
Just three months later, the Portuguese boss got sacked after Chelsea picked up just 11 points in their first 12 games in the Premier League.
And Ferrell feared that his joke had a role in him being given his marching orders.
Appearing on the Men in Blazers show, he confessed his guilt, saying: “I feel like I had a hand in getting Jose Mourinho fired.
“I made a joke at the GQ awards in London where Mourinho was receiving some sort of special award … and I made a crack like: ‘I love your style, seven men in the box, defensive soccer, keep it going.’

Mourinho’s second spell at Chelsea came to a limp end, just after Ferrell’s commentsgetty“And then next thing you know [he’s fired], I’m so sorry.”
Chelsea fans unaware of the incident could’ve easily thought that Ferrell was on their side, given that he’s been seen at Stamford Bridge multiple times.
But after years of speculation over whether he’s truly a Blues fan, the American also delivered a blow to those hopes.
During a surprise Super Sunday appearance in 2023, the sports fanatic was asked about his love of football and then asked which Premier League team he supports.
“I watch a fair amount,” he said.
“I have to say I don’t really have a side over here, I just enjoy following all the storylines and it’s obviously a very good league.
Will Ferrell previously met Chelsea’s team but later admitted he isn’t a supportergetty“I’m going to go out on a limb and say there’s some really good teams and players here.”
The California-born superstar invested in his MLS side LAFC in 2016 long before their first season in 2019.
He regularly attends other sports like ice hockey and tennis, while he also was the star of the 2008 basketball film Semi-Pro.
His investment in LAFC and their journey to the Club World Cup is worth a story of it’s own, though.
The team won the MLS Cup in 2022 in just their third year as an MLS side.
The Club World Cup wasn’t even on their radar heading into 2025, but they were then rewarded with a chance when Club Leon were kicked out over multi-club ownership rules.
Having lost the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League final to Leon, LAFC were given a play-off match against Mexican side Club America, and won, booking their spot in Miami.
They now face Chelsea, live on talkSPORT, before more group games against Tunis and Flamengo.
