It's been roughly three years since audiences last saw Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader patrolling the streets of Gotham City in The Batman. In the years that have followed, a long-awaited sequel to the film has grappled with a nonstop array of production issues, mainly owing to Pattinson's limited availability for filming and the lack of a concrete script.
But in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios CEO James Gunn has provided a major update on The Batman Part II, confirming the project's continued development within DC's operations.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios executive James Gunn (who will also helm the highly anticipated superhero film, Superman) discussed the long-dormant sequel to 2022's The Batman.
While the film doesn't strictly fit into the overarching continuity of Gunn's DC Universe, the director nevertheless said that Pattinson's Batman is "still there" within the series' canon -- even if he's unlikely to appear opposite Superman or Wonder Woman in a future DCU project.
Additionally, Gunn confirmed that Pattinson will definitely return for a sequel, in spite of rumors alluding to the role being recast for The Batman Part II.
In terms of The Batman Part II's production details, the former Guardians of the Galaxy director said that a finished script for the film is close to being finalized, spelling out a major step forward in the movie's production.
"What [director Matt Reeves] is doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary," Gunn told EW. "We're supposed to see that script shortly, and I can't wait."
In the interim, Gunn also said that Reeves will remain hard at work piecing together his own "Batman Epic Crime Saga," which will feature various movies and TV shows set within a self-contained Batman universe (as happened to be the case with The Penguin miniseries).
Not only that, but fans of the DCU can anticipate an upcoming Batman film featuring the Dark Knight and his son Damian in action, reportedly titled The Brave and the Bold.
