The upcoming five-match Test series between India and England is already heating up with bold predictions. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has now just added fuel to the fire, saying that India will have an uphill task at their hands in the Test series, starting on June 20 in Leeds.
The young Indian cricket team led by Shubman Gill will be facing England in the Test series without two of its most iconic batters, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both Kohli and Rohit recently retired from Test cricket, leaving a massive gap in India’s batting lineup.
Panesar believes that the tourists would feel this void heavily in England. As the new ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle is set to begin with the England-India Test series, Panesar predicted that this series may end up being a ruthless display of dominance if the tourists fail to adapt quickly.

With England boasting a seasoned core and India lacking in big-match experience, the former spinner feels the upcoming Test series can be a one-sided affair. He noted that England’s experienced stars know how to handle pressure, so the young Indian side could crumble under the pressure.
Monty Panesar was quoted as saying by ANI, “England will benefit from the fact that Virat and Rohit are not playing. Their experience could have been used for India. But they are inexperienced. What happens with inexperience? ... How will India play against England? We know how England can play. It's possible that India will collapse.”

Meanwhile, Panesar has backed Shubman Gill to shine as the Test captain. The former England spinner believed that India’s captaincy will bring out the best in his batting. He feels the responsibility might just sharpen his focus and push him to perform consistently in the Test series.
Panesar signed off by saying, “I think Shubman Gill will be a good captain.” He will bat well with responsibility. I think he will bat well with responsibility.”

Shubman Gill's IPL record as captain and Test numbers
Gill recently led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2025 playoffs and has already shown he can handle pressure in white-ball cricket. As a GT captain in the IPL, the right-handed batter has won 14 of his 27 matches. In fact, Gill’s performance has improved ever since taking over as the Titans captain, scoring 426 runs in 2024 and 650 runs in 2025.
However, Test cricket presents a different kind of challenge, but he has the ability to thrive. Gill has scored 1893 runs from 59 innings in the longest format of the game, with five centuries and seven fifties to his name. But his overseas record remains a concern, averaging just 29.50. Even Gill has struggled in England, scoring only 88 runs in six innings at an average of 14.66.
