Sabrina Carpenter Announces Surprise New Album: ‘I Tried Not to Overthink’

Short n’ Sweet came out less than a year ago, but Sabrina Carpenter is already planning her next era.

The pop star, 26, surprised fans on Wednesday, June 11, by announcing that her new album, Man’s Best Friend, is coming on August 29. “I didn’t plan on releasing a new record however when inspiration strikes, I go to the studio, and when it doesn’t, I still go to the studio,” Carpenter wrote in an email to fans. “But luckily life was really happening to me and inspiration struck!”

She continued, “I tried not to overthink the process this time, I felt so at ease making Man’s Best Friend that I felt like it was a gift that shouldn’t be taken for granted as every inch came together so effortlessly, where I’d bang my head to crack numerous codes. This one felt like riding a bike!”

Carpenter went on to say that she listened to some of her favorite artists “growing up” while working on the record, including Stevie Nicks, Dolly Parton and Donna Summer. (The “Espresso” singer and Parton, 79, duetted on a remix of “Please Please Please” earlier this year.)

“[I] was surprised to find so many of those artists I loved put out a new record every year for a long time,” Carpenter wrote. “Can’t say that is or will be the norm for me but this time it really eased my mind about putting something out when it feels right! I am endlessly grateful to you who is reading this for your trust in me, and I can’t wait to share these stories with you!”

The Grammy winner also revealed the Man’s Best Friend album cover, which shows her on all fours in a black dress as a man, whose face is not pictured, pulls on her blonde hair.

Carpenter wasn’t kidding about life “really happening” to her since Short n’ Sweet dropped last August. That album’s singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” made her a bigger star than ever before, and the accompanying tour took her all over the U.S. and Europe. In February, she won her first two Grammys, taking home the awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Espresso.” That same month, she appeared on the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special, where she performed “Homeward Bound” with Paul Simon.

The “Feather” artist also faced some drama in her personal life, as she split from actor Barry Keoghan in December 2024. “Sabrina and Barry are broken up,” a source exclusively told Us at the time. “They had a little bit of a break a few months ago, but this break was very recent.”

Earlier this month, Carpenter released a new single titled “Manchild,” which will appear on Man’s Best Friend. She has not yet revealed the rest of the tracklist.

Man’s Best Friend is out Friday, August 29.
