Rock Icon’s Brian Wilson Tribute Has Fans Scratching Their Heads

Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards hilariously confused fans when he made a tribute post for the late Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson, who died on June 11 at age 82.

Richards, 81, posted to his social media accounts in honor of the iconic singer-songwriter’s death a few hours after the news on Wednesday and included a photo of the cover of his memoir, Life, which features the classic rocker’s face, as well as a second photo of a passage in the book where he talks about Wilson. “Rest in Peace!” he captioned the post, which led fans to assume at first glance that Richards himself had passed away.

“For a minute I thought it was Keef!!!” one fan commented on Facebook, referencing Richards by his nickname. “Almost had a heart [attack].” Another fan hilariously wrote, “Phew....I thought Keith died....again.” A third fan clarified, “Brian Wilson NOT Keith Richards.” A fourth commenter added, “Omg Uncle Keef don’t scare us like that!”

And in one hysterical comment, a Facebook user wrote: “But what would be more Keith Richards than Keith Richards announcing the demise of Keith Richards?”

For his part, Richards’ tribute was kind and touching, as the section of the book he highlighted features some nice words about Wilson as a songwriter. “When we first got to America and to LA,” the photographed passage read. “There was a lot of Beach Boys on the radio, which was pretty funny to us—it was before Pet Sounds —it was hot rod songs and surfing songs, pretty lousily played, familiar Chuck Berry licks going on. ‘Round, round get around / I get around,’ I thought that was brilliant.

“It was later on, listening to Pet Sounds, well, it’s all a little bit overproduced for me, but Brian Wilson had something. ‘In My Room,’ ‘Don’t Worry Baby.’ I was more interested in their B-sides, the ones he slipped in,” Richards continued in the book. “There was no particular correlation with what we were doing so I could just listen to it on another level. I thought these are very well-constructed songs.”

Richards has since edited the Facebook version of his caption to clarify and read, “Rest in Peace, Brian Wilson!” whereas the caption on the Instagram version of his post has remained the same.
