CONCACAF monitoring LA protests before Gold Cup opener at SoFi Stadium

CONCACAF released a statement Wednesday, saying that it “remains in close and ongoing communication with local authorities, host venues and the participating national teams” regarding the current and ongoing “situation in Greater Los Angeles.”

This year’s tournament is scheduled to kickoff Saturday at SoFi Stadium with defending champion Mexico facing the Dominican Republic.

    Since Saturday, protests to recent ICE raids have taken to the streets around Southern California, including near SoFi Stadium.

    “The safety and well-being of all participants, fans and stakeholders is the Confederation’s highest priority. We will continue to actively monitor developments as we work toward delivering a world-class tournament that highlights the best of our sport in a safe, inclusive and enjoyable environment for all, starting with the opening match on Saturday, June 14, 2025 in Los Angeles.”

    On Monday, a doubleheader is scheduled to take place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, featuring Panama versus Guadeloupe at 4 p.m. and Jamaica facing Guatemala at 7 p.m. Sunday’s schedule features one game in San Jose and two in San Diego.

    On Tuesday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass implemented a mandatory curfew near the downtown L.A. area from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. It was expected to remain in place for several days.

    Also Tuesday, a Mexican national team spokesman said the team will change hotels in L.A. because “of safety concerns amid the protest against immigration raids in the city.”

    According to a report from The Associated Press, the team will move from downtown L.A. to the Long Beach area.

    Mexico was scheduled to depart North Carolina after Tuesday’s 1-0 win again Turkiye.

    Saturday is the first of a week of big soccer events in L.A. On Sunday, the FIFA Club World Cup plays the first of six games at the Rose Bowl with Paris Saint-Germain facing Atletico Madrid at noon. Games will also be played Tuesday (Monterrey-Inter Milan); June 19 (Paris Saint-Germain-Botafogo); June 21 (River Plate-Monterrey); June 23 (Atletico Madrid-Botafogo); and June 25 (Urawa Red Diamonds-Monterrey.)
