San Diego Customs and Border Protection officers announced that they had a productive month in May, seizing more than 7,850 pounds of narcotics worth more than $17 million.
Methamphetamine made up the vast majority of all the drugs intercepted, with agents netting nearly 6,300 pounds, but agents also found:
Agents discovered the narcotics across 115 incidents.
In one of the month’s larger seizures, CBP officers searched a tractor-trailer at the Calexico East port of entry on May 29 and discovered 100 packages of cocaine in the vehicle’s air tanks. In total, agents seized about 245 pounds of cocaine from the tractor-trailer.
“Targeting techniques are critical to our success,” said Sidney Aki, director of field operations at CBP’s San Diego field office, which oversees border ports in San Diego and Imperial counties. “This seizure demonstrates the power of precision targeting and how intelligence driven enforcement is essential in the fight against organized crime.”
May’s drug seizures are up from April, when CBP officers found more than 7,570 pounds of narcotics, including over 400 pounds of fentanyl.
The agency said it continues this work to weaken drug trafficking networks and maintain community safety.
Fentanyl in particular has been responsible for a growing portion of drug-overdose deaths in San Diego County over the last few years, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency.
CBP invites the public to help its work by reporting suspicious activity to the agency online.
