There aren't many comic book characters as universally popular as Marvel's notoriously foul-mouthed anti-hero, Deadpool.
Famously brought to life by Ryan Reynolds in three successful X-Men spin-offs, Deadpool has slowly become one of the most beloved comic book creations in modern pop culture.
Whether breaking the fourth wall and playfully addressing audiences, or dispatching enemy combatants in outlandishly brutal fashion, the Merc with a Mouth has long since taken on a life of his own in Marvel's extensive lineup of characters, his fame and popularity rivaling other notable creations like Wolverine, Spider-Man or Iron Man.
While the 48-year-old Reynolds remains most closely tied to Deadpool's name, a new star is officially set to portray the character in an upcoming Marvel project. And that star is none other than the equally cartoonish comedy icon, Neil Patrick Harris.
With an extensive background in live theater and legendary sitcoms like How I Met Your Mother, Harris certainly has an impressive portfolio within the realm of comedy -- something he'll no doubt rely on as Deadpool in the new Meta Quest 3 video game, Marvel's Deadpool VR.
Though some fans are certainly excited to see Barney Stinson take over the endlessly sarcastic voice of Marvel's resident bad boy, Ryan Reynolds has shared his own hilarious overreaction to Harris' performance as Deadpool.
In a video directly spoofing Harris' breakout role on Doogie Howser M.D., Reynolds humorously types a personal journal entry in a dated '90s computer.
"Today, I learned a lesson about buttholes they don't teach you in medical school," The Proposal actor reflects. "People who steal your signature role are the biggest buttholes of all."
Doubling down on the tongue-in-cheek spoof to Harris' early series, Reynolds went on to say, "No, I don’t blame Meta Quest. Neil Patrick Harris is an amazing actor with the nurturing voice of an angel, but even though I haven’t hit puberty yet, I still know when you’re getting totally screwed.”
